AppleがBoot Campの期限付きベータを発表した。これにより、Intel Mac(OS X 10.4.6以上)でWindows XPとのマルチブートができるようになる。Boot Camp Betaはwww.apple.com/macosx/bootcampからダウンロード(83MB)できるが、最終版は次期OS X(Version 10.5)である、Leopardでのリリースになるとのこと。
但し、AppleからのWindows販売やサポートはしないそうだ。

CUPERTINO, California—April 5, 2006—Apple® today introduced Boot Camp, public beta software that enables Intel-based Macs to run Windows XP. Available as a download beginning today, Boot Camp allows users with a Microsoft Windows XP installation disc to install Windows XP on an Intel-based Mac®, and once installation is complete, users can restart their computer to run either Mac OS® X or Windows XP. Boot Camp will be a feature in “Leopard,” Apple’s next major release of Mac OS X, that will be previewed at Apple’s Worldwide Developer Conference in August.
少し昔なら、これで次機種は決定のはずだった。僕はMacからNEXTSTEPへ流れ、次はIndyへ行くか～（笑）ってトコで、仕事の都合で仕方なくWindowsに移ってきた経緯があるから。でも今は複雑。本命はコレ↓というか、コレのGoogle版かな。否定されてるけど、いわゆるGoogle PCね。
昨年11月にCNETなどで報じられたので、知ってる人も多いと思うが、上の写真はMIT Media Labの非営利団体が開発した100ドルPCの「OLPC(One Laptop Per Child)」。発展途上国の子供たちにも手に入るようにとの願いから作られた。ハンドルは発電するためのもの。1月にラスベガスで開催された2006 International CESで、Googleのラリー・ペイジもキーノート・スピーチでこれを紹介している。What is the $100 Laptop, really?:OSはLinux（ブラウザ使う分には何であろうと殆ど関係ない）。僕らの感覚ではスペックはやや低いが、今は$100でもっといいのができるだろう。別に$100ドルにこだわらなければ、サムソンの32GB NANDフラッシュメモリーディスク積めばいいし。中国向けのマネージャーが選任されたというニュースが掲載されているので、中国の田舎の方なんかはOLPCが多数派になる可能性もあるな。
The proposed $100 machine will be a Linux-based, with a dual-mode display—both a full-color, transmissive DVD mode, and a second display option that is black and white reflective and sunlight-readable at 3× the resolution. The laptop will have a 500MHz processor and 128MB of DRAM, with 500MB of Flash memory; it will not have a hard disk, but it will have four USB ports. The laptops will have wireless broadband that, among other things, allows them to work as a mesh network; each laptop will be able to talk to its nearest neighbors, creating an ad hoc, local area network. The laptops will use innovative power (including wind-up) and will be able to do most everything except store huge amounts of data.
この100ドルPCのオリジナルデザインは台湾のQuanta Computer Inc. が担当している。Taiwan GJ!だと思う。MITメディアラボの共同創始者であり、チェアマンでもあるNicholas Negroponteと主たる技術を担当するMary Lou Jepsenを軸に、Walter Bender, Michail Bletsas, V. Michael Bove, Jr., David Cavallo, Benjamin Mako Hill, Joseph Jacobson, Alan Kay（あのアランケイ）, Tod Machover, Seymour Papert, Mitchel Resnick, Ted Selkerといった、MIT Media Labの教授達が支援している。リサイクルデスクトップの方が安くできていいのでは？という疑問に関しては、
モバイルであることが重要。昼は学校で、夜に家でパソコンするには機動性が大切だから。それに、発展途上国の子供達には最新テクノロジー、真に頑丈なハードと革新的なソフトが必要なのだ。カンボジアのある村では電気がなく、ラップトップPCが灯りになったということだってある。また、１億台のデスクトップをリサイクルしようと思えば、最低でも54万人月の人間による作業を介在させねばならない。と回答されているね。

てなことを書いていると、この100ドルPCが来年初頭には流通し始めるというニュースが飛び込んできた。グッドタイミング。

前から言っているように、これからは他の誰かには役に立っても自分自身は必要としない機能が満載のコテコテOSやソフト、バッテリがすぐに無くなるような高クロックのCPUなどは不要。firefoxやOperaのようなブラウザと無線LAN機能、低画素のCMOSカメラとマイクがあればいい。だからコンビニや玩具店で山積みで売られるようになるだろう。ストレージはGDrive、メールはGMail、写真はFlickr、スプレッドシートもワープロもスケジュールもブックマークもビデオもみんなネットにあるからねえ。PCもそしてサーバー類も所有することに価値が有るものから無いものへだんだんと分類されてゆく。
こんなこと書く必要がないくらい、Web2.0を言い出した人やWeb進化論を支持する人はそういう世界が当たり前と考えていると思うし、Common Senseだろう。だからAppleでさえもWeb1.0企業と言われているのだろうね。
