2006 Commencement Address:
Now will saying “yes” get you in trouble at times? Will saying “yes” lead you to doing some foolish things? Yes it will. But don’t be afraid to be a fool. Remember, you cannot be both young and wise. Young people who pretend to be wise to the ways of the world are mostly just cynics. Cynicism masquerades as wisdom, but it is the farthest thing from it. Because cynics don’t learn anything. Because cynicism is a self-imposed blindness, a rejection of the world because we are afraid it will hurt us or disappoint us. Cynics always say no. But saying “yes” begins things. Saying “yes” is how things grow. Saying “yes” leads to knowledge. “Yes” is for young people. So for as long as you have the strength to, say “yes.”
Yesと言うことが君たちを困らせるかい？ Yesということは愚かなことに導くかい？ 愚かであることを恐れるな。いいかい、若さと賢さは両立しないんだ。世の中に気付いているフリをしたいと思う若者は大抵皮肉屋だ。シニシズムは見せかけの 賢さだ。でも、賢さからは最も遠い。何故なら皮肉屋は何も学ばないから。何故ならシニシズムは自らに盲目を課すから。傷ついたり失望するのではないかと思 うが故に世界を拒否するからだ。皮肉屋はいつもNoを言う。Yesと言うことが始まりなんだ。Yesと言うことが物事を成長させ、Yesと言うことが知に 至るんだ。Yesは若者のための言葉。君たちが強さを持っている間は、Yesと言おう。
それでも、Time誌が「世界で最も影響力のある100人」として選んだことを受けて、こんなことを言っている。
2006 Commencement Address:
But if you do the math, there are 100 Most Influential People in the World. There are 6.5 billion people in the world. That means that today I am here representing 65 million people. That’s as big as some countries. What country has about 65 million people? Iran? Iran has 65 million people. So, for all intents and purposes, I’m here representing Iran today. Don’t shoot.
でも君たちが数学ができるなら、世界で最も影響力のある100人が居るとして、世界の人口が65億人だとする。つまり、今日、僕は6500万人を代表して ここに居るわけだ。それってちょっとした国の人口くらいだ。6500万人の人口の国ってどこ？ イラン？ イランの人口は6500万人だ。だから、どう見ても僕はイランを代表して今日ここに居るわけだ。

それにしても、Knoxカレッジのサイトがメチャメチャ重い、というか、混んでる模様。まあ、BoingBoingも取り上げているし、殺到するのも無理ないか。
